What are dental implants and bridges?

Dental implants look similar to household screws and replace the natural roots of teeth. These implants, generally made of titanium or zirconium oxide, create a foundation for faux crowns if you lose a tooth for any reason. Over time, the implant will fuse to your jaw bone and become a permanent fixture to support an artificial tooth. Single tooth implants are the most common implant procedure.

Sometimes people need full or partial sets of dentures later in life. Traditional dentures are used to replace a long line of missing teeth that you can remove and replace yourself with an adhesive. A number of root implants can help to stabilize your dentures. Depending on your needs, anywhere from two to eight implants can be placed either with or without a stabilizing bar, to provide a more secure fit than traditional adhesive.

Implants are not suitable for everyone depending on allergies or other health concerns. In this case, you may need a dental bridge. Dental bridges consist of three or more artificial crowns cemented together. Instead of implanting a makeshift root, this procedure fills the gap of a lost tooth with a faux crown using the support of the surrounding teeth with roots intact.

What can I expect from surgery?

Dental implants may require a number of surgeries over the course of a few months. Most people prefer to be sedated in addition to having local anesthesia to make the procedure as smooth as possible. If you choose a sedation method, you will need to bring someone to the appointment with you to drive you home after the surgery and assist with any aftercare.

It is normal to experience some pain and swelling for a few days after the surgery. Usually, you will be prescribed pain medication and/or an antibiotic to take on the days after. It is very important to take the medication exactly as described. Your provider will inform you of how you should eat and care for yourself following surgery.

How much will it cost?

Pricing for dental implants is based on the level of care needed and insurance coverage varies case by case. Call any one of our clinics for more information about our free consultation program that comes FREE with every dental cleaning. Our team will be happy to help you establish next steps so that you can regain the confidence to smile and eat with ease!
