What is a root canal?

The term “root canal” refers to a treatment that removes the bacteria-filled pulp, disinfects the inside of the canals, then fills and seals the tooth from crown to root. Pain, swelling, gum, and temperature sensitivity may be signs of an infection, suggesting a root canal may be necessary.

What can I expect from the procedure?

The vast majority of people do not need general anesthesia for a root canal and can remain conscious and pain-free during the procedure. Most patients will need two visits to complete the treatment.First, the dentist will take x-rays of the tooth and inject a local anesthetic. Then, the dentist will use precise tools to gain access to the canal, clean out infected pulp and tissue, and finally fill the root with a temporary dental material. During your second visit, the dentist will remove the temporary filling and restore the tooth, usually by placing a crown over the top of the tooth.

What do I do after?

You may have to wait a few hours before eating and stick to soft foods or chew around the affected tooth over the following days. It is normal to experience some sensitivity and discomfort for a few days after the procedure. Your dentist will inform you of any medication you can take if needed, or may even prescribe specific medicines. Please make sure to follow the directions given to you.

How much will it cost?

Pricing for root canals varies based on the level of care needed which is be determined by the provider. Insurance usually covers at least part of the total cost. Call now for more information about our consultation program that comes FREE with every dental cleaning.
